The back requires certain nutrients to be healthy and functional. I could go on forever about nutrition an its importance to ones health, but I would end up writing a book. Since that is not possible within the limitations of this lesson plan I will mention the most important aspects of nutrition that target the health of the back.
To start with the basics the body needs water. I mean good clean water. Putting in a filtration system on your kitchen sink is a good start. The next thing the body needs is protein and complex carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates usually contain sugar which is useless for good health. Sugar deletes your B vitamins and can aggravate arthritis. The B complex vitamins are also important for a healthy nervous system.
Vitamin C with bioflavonoids are necessary for healthy connective tissue and Calcium plus Magnesium for strong bones. Fish oil containing the Omega – 3 fatty acids can help relieve pain plus it is good for circulation, brain function, and the soft tissues throughout the body. Vitamin E is also important to the circulatory system and it is a potent anti-oxidant as is vitamin C and fish oil. For joint health a combination of Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate is very important, but individuals with seafood allergies need to be careful since these substances are derived from shellfish. Also useful for relieving joint discomfort is Sea Cucumber.
A high quality Multiple Vitamin with minerals especially boron is also helpful. I feel that eating properly is the most important thing, but to get everything we need daily from the food we eat is difficult, since its almost impossible to know their vitamin and mineral levels. A good supplement can fill in the gaps in ones nutritional needs.
